According to many Wholistic Health practioners, the human body has four major systems used to keep the body in balance. These four systems are:

1) Metabolism, 2) Hydration, 3) Acid/Alkaline balance, 4) Breath/oxygen absorbtion

When the body's systems are functioning well and in balance, we are healthy. When one of these systems is weakened, the other three systems will seek to compensate for the weakened system. However, over time the imbalance tends to weaken the other three systems and then the body begins to exhibit symptoms of imbalance (illness.)

By the time you notice symptoms of illness, the body has been out of balance for a long time. Let's look at each system in more detail.

METABOLISM - The metabolic system can be influenced by genetic factors. Metabolism doesn't only refer to the "Speed" of the body's metabolic rate. It refers to the body's ability to metabolize the nutrients it receives. Many people seeking to lose weight will take stimulants like caffeine or phen-phen or guranana seeking to "speed up" their metabolism. Not only are these chemicals harmful to the body, they do not improve the body's ability to metabolize nutrients. If a person does not have a good ability to metabolize nutrients, speeding up the heart rate will not help someone to lose weight. The good news is that through proper nutrition and a clean internal state the metabolism can improve.

HYDRATION - The human body is made up of 70% water. Water is the medium through which everything travels in the body. So, it is obvious why we need to be well hydrated. We have been told that we should be drinking 8 - 10 glasses of water per day. This is a purely abritrary number. If the body is not able to ABSORB water well, it doesn't matter how much water you drink, you will still be dehydrated. A healthy body has the ability to absorb water from the air, from food and from liquids consumed.

ACID/ALKALINE BALANCE - Acids are necessary for bodily functioning. The body wants to be primarily alkaline in order to insulate the body from the acids it uses. When we become more acidic, the acid tends to back up into the organs. Too much acid in the body creates an environment conducive to the reproduction of unhealthy bacteria and viruses and makes us more susceptible to illnesses.

OXYGEN ABSORBTION / BREATH - Oxygen is neccessary for all cellualr activity. We all know this. We can survive for months without food but we cannot survive more than 3 minutes without breathing. The breath is also critical for processing emotions. Many of us have been trained to suppress our feelings. When this happens we automatically suppress our breath. By doing this we are not only preventing ourselves from thoroughly experienceing and processing our feelings, we are also denying our bodies the oxygen it needs to perform adequately. These suppressed feelings tend become trapped in our bodies and cause stress which has a very destructive efffect on our minds and our bodily tissues.
